Postural Balancing and it's relationship to TMJ
by Dennis Gibbons, LMT

There are many discussions as to the cause of Temporal-Mandibular Joint (TMJ) pain and dysfunction (TMJD). Depending on the discipline of assessment, the problem often comes up with a version that fits their specialty. What I propose to discuss here is how the musclo-skeletal system supports this area of the body.

Anatomically, the cranium has eight bones and the face has fourteen, and is divided by what is called sutures. The Temporal bone and the Mandible are the two bony structures that make up the Temporal Mandibular Joint. The Temporal bone is on the side of the head by the ear and Mandible makes up the lower jaw. When the body is functioning in proper balance and the correct muscles are working we are able to talk, chew, and yawn without discomfort. It is the improper functioning that will cause the debilitating pain and headaches that people experience.

What are some of the causes we see that create the imbalance in the soft tissue? Grinding of the teeth or bruxism, clenching of the jaw, biting down on hard food, a hard cough or sneezing, and nervous tension will create the scenario necessary to change the balance of the structure.

At Chagrin Valley Wellness Center we abide by the formula of:

          * Function equals Movement
          * Posture determines Movement
          * Movement reveals Posture

This is the basis of the Muscle Release Therapy, MRTh®, which is practiced by all of the therapists at the Center.

By using this formula to treat and correct the imbalance to the soft tissue structures the therapist evaluates the entire structure, including the Pelvic region, the lower extremities, and even the feet. The therapist will also assess the situation to help in determine if the jaw is causing other compensation in the body or if the body is using the jaw to adapt to other problematic areas.

The mandible is its own entity and therefore it will often adapt itself to “protect” postural imbalances that would bring about acute symptoms elsewhere. It has been my experience that in many cases of chronic stiff neck, balancing the soft tissue that holds the mandible in place, dissipates neck pain and allows for a more balanced bite and freedom of movement.

We work with many disciplines at Chagrin Valley Wellness Center but most recently have started a professional association with Dentists and Orthodontists that work with many cases of Temporal Mandible Dysfunction (TMD). The progression of using dentistry as an alternative health care process, along with Massage Therapy is not new. The utilization of Postural Balancing by means of Muscle Release Therapy, MRTh® however, is new. The therapist works with the doctor by becoming part of the process and helps in balancing some of the improprieties found in the overall structure. The importance of this is that once the person is either fitted with their Orthodonture or Orthotic, the body is still in movement. It is improper structure that will determine the movement, so by combining the two therapies, a more holistic result will take place in the complete balancing. This will create proper structure to permit proper movement.

A good relationship is necessary for this to succeed. The relationship needs to be between the person, the doctor, and the therapist. We at Chagrin Valley Wellness Center have developed relationships with some of the most respected authorities in their field. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us and we will be glad to discuss this issue with us. Or you may go to the link of the web site, Ask our LMT’s, and we will be glad to answer your question or refer you to one of the specialist that we associate with.
