The Myths and Reality of Relaxation Massage
by Dennis Gibbons, LMT

One of the new offerings at Chagrin Valley Wellness Center is Club CVWC.  Club CVWC is a program that encourages individuals to receive at least one relaxation massage every month as part of their overall wellness care. I’m very excited about this new program for a variety of reasons.

Why do I need relaxation massage?  Your therapy does me so much good and I am relaxed after one of those sessions.

Your body needs a regular time that it can rest and you can go off into a tranquil place.  Muscle Release Therapy, MRTh®, while important for maintaining muscular balance to reduce abnormal tension on the skeleton and ease pain, isn’t relaxation massage.  Relaxation massage reduces stress on the structure as a whole.  It addresses the skin and underlying tissues to open up pathways that allow for an ease of circulation and reduces superficial pressure on the nervous system.  Muscle Release Therapy, MRTh® addresses the intricate improprieties that create an encumbrance in the body’s ability to move without pain.

How will relaxation massage help me with my overall wellness?

By simply aiding the body in finding a comfort level so that the effects of stress do not overwhelm the internal structures.   Stress as the general public refers to it is the day to day pressures that are put on an individual. Tension is what is placed on internal structures to keep the balance that allows us to continue to move without discomfort.   While some people use stress and tension interchangeably, they are different.  To a massage therapist, stress isn’t good.  Balanced tension is good.  Tension holds things together.

Relaxation massage strengthens the body’s immune system.  This may help fight off diseases such as the common cold and all of the viruses associated with the winter season. There is also research being done on the overall benefits to the heart and the possibilities of helping prevent diseases such as cancer.

Why the sudden interest in relaxation massage?

Over the past couple of years I believe that most individuals in the United States have suffered more stress than probably since the great depression, and yes, that does include the recent political campaign ads. The technology boom has over-stimulated the entire population so much so that our reliance on instant knowledge is becoming addictive. Taking time once a month to stop and allow the body to relax and be rejuvenated will help us stay healthy and well. This type of preventive care can help us all stay healthy and well.

Why should I sign up for a Club membership?

Two things will happen when you sign up.  First, you make a financial commitment, which will help with your intention to take care of yourself and be well.  Second, when you make a commitment, you create a positive energy that in itself can be beneficial.  The discounts you receive with membership will help offset some of the costs you incur.  Being in charge of your health is empowering; it may be the best health insurance you can have.

In closing, I encourage everyone to look into this new addition to the services being offered at Chagrin Valley Wellness Center to help them help themselves. I would also encourage everyone who receives relaxation massage to question their therapist about what training he or she has received.

If there are any further questions, please contact our office and speak to one of the therapists who will be able to answer, or at least find an answer, to your question. As the holidays approach please enjoy them and maybe, just maybe give yourself a gift of feeling well.

Respectfully yours in Joy and Peace,
