Acupuncture is a complete system of medicine based on principles which have been used in the Orient for the last 3000 years. It is used by one third of the world's population, and has been endorsed by the World Health Organization as well as the National Institute of Health. More and more insurance companies are paying for it, observing that patients of this ancient medical are:

* are healthier with more stamina and vitality

* rebound more quickly from illness and surgery

* take fewer sick days form work

* do not need as many medications

* in some cases, avoid expensive surgery or other medical treatments

* in addition patients of this technique feel a lot better, both physically and emotionally.

Science can study what happens when bones or wounds heal, but cannot fully explain why this happens. Acupuncture works with the life force behind these processes.

This life force (or chi) is the vital energy which created the body originally and continues to keep it alive and functioning properly. Disease manifests and is not cured when this life force becomes weakened to such an extent that it can no longer heal. This shows as an imbalance in the energy currents (called meridians) or pathways through which the chi passes. Ancient masters traced these pathways and located points along them. These points are energetically connected to specific organs, body structures, and systems. Modern science has been able to measure the electrical charge at these points thus corroborating the locations of the life energy channels mapped by the ancients. If the energy circulation is disrupted, optimum function is affected and this results in pain or illness.

A system was developed for determining the quality and mobility of the life energy in each person. This system, which involves palpation of the six pulses on each wrist is still used today in oriental medical diagnosis. By means of the pulse diagnosis the practitioner can determine which organ systems are weak or overstrung and can also monitor the effects of treatment.
